Refined Vacations

Refined Vacations is an eco-adventure travel brand I built the marketing site for and continue to maintain. Before we listed a single partner publicly, I audited one hundred and eleven candidates against their own sustainability claims, and we kept the seven whose claims held up under that scrutiny. The gap between the number audited and the number kept is the whole argument of the brand, and the site is designed to make that gap visible on every page a visitor lands on.

The voice of the brand

Refined Vacations has something most travel sites do not, which is a personality. I wrote a two-thousand-word voice guide before I wrote a line of copy for the public-facing pages, and the voice that came out of that exercise sits somewhere between the irreverent skeptic and the earned authority: warm but unsentimental, sharp enough to call out greenwashing when it sees it, and specific enough about what it likes to earn a reader's trust in the pages that follow.

We feature seven partners. We have access to one hundred and eleven. The gap is intentional, and every certification, every claim, and every "eco-friendly" label has been held up against actual data.

The rule I applied throughout was roughly this: the more money is on the line for the visitor, the more authoritative the voice becomes; the more the industry deserves to be called out for a particular practice, the more irreverent the voice allows itself to be. The net effect is that every page, every description, and every call to action sounds as though it was written by the same person, and the reason it sounds that way is that it was.

The Fibonacci Design System

Every value in the CSS derives from the Fibonacci sequence. RGB channels restricted to: 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233. Spacing uses Fibonacci increments. The color palette has three tiers:

The Site

PHP with server-side includes for header, footer, and config. Clean separation of concerns — each page (destinations, partners, gear, about, contact) gets its own file with page-specific styles injected after the shared Fibonacci CSS.

Voice Rules

Ten "do" rules drive every word on the site:
